Here are 5 things you absolutely can’t miss if you find yourself in the center of Bologna during spring

Spring is on its way, bringing with it a breath of fresh air and new beginnings. This is what many consider the best time to discover Bologna, with its experiences and hidden gems.

The days grow longer, the air becomes milder, and the city fills with colors, scents and outdoor life. Between sunlit porticoes, blooming parks and breathtaking views, our Emilian capital shows its very best side in this season.
Bologna in spring is a city that invites you to slow down, explore and enjoy every corner. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a regular guest, this is the perfect moment to rediscover it with fresh eyes. Here are 5 things you absolutely must see in Bologna in spring.

Spend an afternoon at the Giardini Margherita in bloom

With the arrival of spring, Giardini Margherita becomes the green heart of the city. It’s the perfect place for a relaxing walk, an impromptu picnic, or simply to enjoy the sunshine among blooming trees and well-kept lawns. Between small lakes, tree-lined paths and always-busy benches, the atmosphere is lively and authentically Bolognese.

Locals often call them “the Gardens,” precisely because they’re immersed in greenery while still being in the city center. They’re ideal for spending time together and unwinding—maybe reading a book or joking around with friends and family. Many people also exercise outdoors, jogging or walking their dogs on a leash. Considered the green lung of central Bologna, with its 26 hectares it is one of the largest parks in the region.

It’s a distinctive and well-known place for everyone in Bologna and the surrounding area—a small “paradise” where time seems to stand still, days pass peacefully, and a sense of freedom can be felt in every corner.

Spring in Bologna: walk up to the Sanctuary of San Luca

In Bologna there’s a very famous saying: “when you see San Luca, you know you’re home.” This is especially true for those returning to the city—the Sanctuary of the Church of San Luca can be seen from many points around Bologna, especially from the motorway, and the moment it comes into view, locals immediately feel at ease.

Thousands of people visit it every day, also because the Sanctuary is connected to the city center by the world’s longest portico: an incredible 666 arches, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, creating a striking path between blue skies and green hills. Spring is the ideal time to take on this iconic walk. Once at the top, the view over Bologna is spectacular: red rooftops, medieval towers and rolling hills stretching to the horizon. A bit of sweat, rewarded one hundred percent.

Visit Piazza Santo Stefano and the Seven Churches complex

The Basilica of Santo Stefano in Bologna is a group of religious buildings overlooking the square of the same name, and it is also known as the “Seven Churches” complex. Built in different periods, these sacred buildings—made up of several churches, courtyards and spaces—were originally intended to recreate a symbolic path linked to the sites of Christ’s Passion in Jerusalem.

In spring, Piazza Santo Stefano takes on an even more special charm. The sun lights up the square, café tables fill up, and the atmosphere becomes almost magical. Visiting the Seven Churches complex during this time means enjoying the peace and beauty of one of the most evocative places in the city, blending history, art and spirituality.

It’s a corner of the historic center where culture and beauty can truly be felt, a place where it’s a pleasure to stroll and watch the city flow slowly around you. For some it’s a meeting place, for others a spot to relax, and for others still a way to step back in time. A true architectural gem, perfect to explore in the soft light of spring.

Spring in Bologna: the Quadrilatero, Piazza Maggiore, the Fountain of Neptune and historic markets

If you’re in Bologna, you simply can’t miss exploring the city’s beating heart. With milder temperatures, you should absolutely lose yourself in the narrow streets of the Quadrilatero, the ancient market district just steps away from Piazza Maggiore and the famous Fountain of Neptune.

This area is perfect around lunchtime or for an aperitivo, as you’ll be immersed in an explosion of colors and aromas that’s hard to imagine: historic delicatessens, artisan shops and markets like Mercato di Mezzo offer the very best of Bolognese gastronomic tradition.

Climb up to the panoramic terrace of the Torre degli Asinelli

One of Bologna’s most iconic sights? The Two Towers—especially the Torre degli Asinelli. You can book a visit to climb all the way to the top, and it’s an experience not to be missed, particularly in spring. Right in the heart of the city, the weather is ideal at this time of year and the view from above is incredibly clear. After tackling nearly 500 steps, Bologna opens up before your eyes in all its beauty: a sea of red rooftops framed by green hills. Taking a photo here is practically mandatory.

The Torre degli Asinelli is steeped in ancient history and legends, and it’s surrounded by a centuries-old superstition: Bologna’s university students avoid climbing to the top before graduating, as it’s believed to bring bad luck and prevent them from earning their degree. This superstition is so strong that many students wait until graduation day to finally make the climb.

If you don’t want to miss these things and you live outside Bologna, our advice is to book an accommodation in the city center for a unique and immersive experience. Where? At the Ghisiliera B&B, a property with 40 square meters of apartments located in a strategic position for exploring Bologna like a true local.
