July 2026 in Bologna: Ruth Orkin, Caparezza, Frah Quintale, Frida Kahlo, Bonsai Garden, Palazzo d’Accursio

July in Bologna is synonymous with full summer: the city slows down during the day, but comes alive in the evenings with open-air cinemas, concerts, festivals and events. Between squares, parks and historic buildings, Bologna transforms into a large open-air stage.

During this time of year, days in the historic center pass calmly under the sun thanks to the shade of the beautiful Porticoes, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Every corner becomes a place to experience and share, creating the perfect moment to immerse yourself in the city’s lively atmosphere and the many events on the calendar. Here’s what to see and do in Bologna in July 2026.

Caparezza and Frah Quintale in Bologna – July 7–8 and 12, 2026

Not only international artists: Caparezza returns live to Bologna with his 2026 tour. The Italian singer-songwriter will perform in over 20 dates across the country between June and September, and will soon be in concert in the capital of Emilia-Romagna with two fantastic nights.

Caparezza will perform at Sequoie Music Park, located in Parco Caserme Rosse, Via Corticella 147, Bologna, on the evenings of Tuesday July 7 and Wednesday July 8, 2026. Two special nights immersed in nature and open air. A unique, original and multifaceted artist, and one of the pioneers of Italian rap, Caparezza has always stood out in the music scene for his strong literary skills, combining satire and social critique.

But that’s not all: among the main artists performing at the Sequoie event, Bologna will also host Frah Quintale on the evening of Sunday July 12, 2026. Alongside hits from his previous works, the setlist will include songs from his new album “Amor Proprio”, an emotional journey between vulnerability and lightness, sleepless nights and sunny days – all captured in 11 tracks.

With his unique style blending alternative pop and urban sounds, Frah Quintale delivers a versatile project that alternates intimate, reflective moments with more energetic and carefree ones. At the heart of the album lies the theme of self-love and the time needed to rediscover oneself: songs about finding balance, letting go and living in the present.

Ruth Orkin: “The Illusion of Time” at Palazzo Pallavicini – until July 19, 2026

Started on March 5, and running until July 19, 2026, Palazzo Pallavicini once again focuses on the female gaze in photography with a major retrospective exhibition dedicated to Ruth Orkin, titled “The Illusion of Time.”

Inside this historic and authentic Bolognese palace in the heart of the city center, visitors can explore 187 photographs, two cameras and several important documents that highlight the crucial role of Orkin’s work in the history of photography.

Orkin used to observe and capture everyday life from her window, turning the street into a spontaneous stage. Her subjects, unaware of their role, become protagonists in a narrative shaped by the alternation of movement and stillness. The exhibition also features portraits of famous personalities such as Albert Einstein, Marlon Brando, Robert Capa, Alfred Hitchcock and Orson Welles.

This is a true retrospective – the largest ever organized in Italy – dedicated to one of the most important American photojournalists, photographers and filmmakers of the 20th century.

BOnsai Garden at Parco delle Caserme Rosse – until July 23, 2026

Bologna welcomes back the fifth edition of BOnsai Garden at Parco delle Caserme Rosse. It is a major summer music festival set in a green space, bringing fresh energy to the hot Bolognese summer with a series of nights featuring artists from a wide range of musical scenes.

With a rich lineup including both well-known and more underground artists, from June 18 to July 23, 2026, a variety of shows will take place not far from the famous Sequoie stage, creating an impressive mix of styles.

At BOnsai Garden, the cultural offering expands beyond music to include comedy and more, embracing a wide range of tastes and genres, appealing to both younger audiences and families.

The idea behind the festival is to connect music with the environment. The focus is on highlighting the relationship between environmental sustainability and musical culture. The event aims to become a recognized fixture in the city for the quality of its musical program and its ability to attract a diverse audience.

The history of Bologna at Palazzo d’Accursio – all July 2026

Do you want to discover the history and ancient civic art of Bologna? Then you shouldn’t miss Palazzo d’Accursio this summer.

Throughout July 2026, you can explore the historic and institutional heart of Bologna with a guided tour inside this historic palace overlooking the beautiful Piazza Maggiore.

Book your visit to discover the Municipal Palace, from its origins in the 12th century to the present day. Once the seat of city magistrates and a papal residence, the palace has served many functions and hosted emperors and sovereigns, and still today houses the political and institutional heart of Bologna.

During the visit, you will uncover the secrets of places such as Piazza Maggiore, the Courtyard of Honor, the Grand Staircase (Scalone dei Cavalli), the Hall of Hercules, the Hall of the Elders, the Red Hall, the Council Hall, the Farnese Hall, the Farnese Chapel, and the Municipal Art Collections.

“Frida Kahlo. The Gaze as Identity” at Palazzo Pepoli – all July 2026

For art and culture lovers, Bologna is also hosting a beautiful photographic exhibition dedicated to Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, titled “The Gaze as Identity.”

Opened at Palazzo Pepoli on March 28, the exhibition will run throughout July and will actually end on September 27, 2026. It features 70 original photographs created by major photographers such as Edward Weston, Lucienne Bloch, Lola Álvarez Bravo, Julien Levy, Nickolas Muray, Gisèle Freund, Imogen Cunningham, Leo Matiz, Bernard Silberstein and Graciela Iturbide.

Artist, activist, woman, icon – Frida Kahlo has become in recent years a powerful symbol for themes that are deeply relevant today, such as identity, the body, pain and self-representation.

Kahlo was always highly aware of her own image. Her extensive use of self-portraiture – which began after the accident that, at just eighteen, left her bedridden for more than three months and marked her for life – reflects a constant exploration of self-representation. Even her choice to wear traditional Mexican clothing, in contrast to the fashion of the time, became an integral part of her identity and later her myth.

Kahlo even went so far as to modify her own name and change her birth year, aligning it with that of the Mexican Revolution.
